On week days I travel from where I live and travel to where I work to train to become an engineer, completing NVQ's and BTEC's. These include practical and theory lessons from bench fitting to maths, it is my job to achieve these qualifications
I have gained many new skills while developing as a person as well. These include new things I have never done before such as machining. While developing my skills at work I also develop my social skills away from work with my collegues.
I enjoy my life on this apprenticeship as not only am I learning and developing myself as a person, I also have many opportunities such as going on educational trips abroad to places like Budapest and Berlin.
I do feel valued as everyone is given the same opportunity, our apprentice coordinator comes down every so often to have one to ones to see if there any problems we're having to make sure we're happy and developing to our best potential.
I feel it is very well structured as we were slowly introduced into our place of work and where we live with a week induction. Lessons are planned ahead so we are aware of what we have in advance. Every 12 weeks we have a review of our progress to see where we can imporove.
Support is provided everywhere, from instructors to the nurse. If there any problems with work we can speak to our instructors or our training providers manager about it, if there any other non work realted issues we can speak to people such as the nurse or the team that is at our accomodation.
Our employer provides just as much support with our manager on site, any issues can be discussed with him. Any issues can also be discussed with our coordinators as I can contact him easily if I cant contact my manager
Luckily, our employer covers most if not all the costs. Travel, food, acoomodation and training resources are all paid for by my employer therefore my salary doesnt have to be spent on any costs and can just be spent on activities with my collegues on the weekends.
Living away from home up north to Portsmouth presents a huge opportunity to explore a new area whilst I am living down here as there are many more opportunities down in Portsmouth than where I live. There are also sometimes activities set up by my company suchas the dragon boat race.
Yes
A superb opprotunity to explore a new area, spend 2 years away from home devloping work skills whilst also developing social skills. A very good salary set up with no costs to pay for to experience new opportunities and to make new friends.
Make sure you truly want to do the job, be confident, have a good and interesting presentation set up for the interview and get involved on the group assessment by putting ideas across. While down in Portsmouth I would recommend making the most of all opportunities and use your salary to explore different areas.
