C&I Maintenance technician role, this involves maintaining and calibrating control and measurement equipment. Using various methods and the information we have learnt over the duration of the apprenticeship
Learnt about auto control and how things are designed to be self managing. The types of things measured and the various ways in which we measure them. We also did a course that developed our understanding of the nuclear industry as a whole. Our apprenticeship included lots of aspects of engineering, and in our second year we were filtered into a trade that fit our skill set.
I really enjoyed my apprenticeship, it provided lots of opportunities to gain qualifications, experience, travel and make new friends.
I feel like our capability was important and the investment made in qualifications to improve this speaks to the value that EDF places on its apprentices.
The structure was great and our programme coordinator really had a positive input into our progression.
If ever support was needed it was provided. You always have a point of contact to go to in order to clarify things or get help with any personal situation.
My coordinator was excellent and I felt lucky to have someone as on the ball as him when it came to transitions in living and transport. He also advised us of any opportunities coming up and if they would benefit us and how to best apply.
Given that the first two years are totally catered for and you get paid your living cost are zero. So the salary goes far. You're also aware of how the salary progresses and at what point. This coupled with the qualifications you get really makes it appealing as a package.
The scheme contained many chances to go abroad and see other countries. This was well supported by the company and didn't affect your leave. The scheme also gave us chances to take part in after work activities and charity events.
Yes
As a whole package the scheme hits all the important parts. It pays well, the opportunities to experience things are there and the structure is defined. These are all things that help with personal progression. This scheme helped me in more ways than I could have hoped for and gave me a solid footing into the engineering world.
Scratch up on your company knowledge about assets in this country. Get a basic understanding of tools and practical work. Try and have a decent example of your work. School leavers used school projects from DT or that sort. But anything that shows design consideration and practical application of it. All this will help you in your application!
