  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am audit associate currently in my third year at the firm. I work in a team on a weekly basis visiting different clients to complete the audit. As you progress in each year you have a different role to play. As I am in my third year I have now begun to in-charge audits.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The school leaver programme enables you to complete 2 qualifications. I have completed the AAT and I am now part of the Association of Accounting Technicians. I am now studying for the ACCA. Within the firm I have also had training on the type of organisation, basic accounting and how to use software effectively.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the culture of Grant Thornton as everyone is always willing to help out and are all really friendly. I love working in Audit as you get to visit new clients every few weeks and work with different people which means there is no chance to get bored and you are always developing and learning.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme for school leavers is usually 2 years AAT and then a further 3 years either doing ACA or ACCA. Throughout the training contract you receive internal training at Bradenham Manor. Every year there is an opportunity to be promoted which is great motivation. Additionally, you have support from the job managers as well as line managers and line partners who mentor you.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Grant Thornton support me incredibly. I have all of my colleagues who are always willing to help. Especially as we have year groups you always know who to speak to. Additionally, there are many internal training manuals available which can help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary as a school leaver can be tight however if you have never had a job before (like me) it is good money. Travel costs are covered by the firm as expenses (most of the time). Therefore this can be eliminated. The jump in pay when the AAT is completed (after 2 years) is to graduate level which is good for the size of the firm and meets costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are always networking events at the firm which are open to all colleagues. Additionally, as a firm we complete volunteering days which always feel like you are giving something back. There are also social activities such as drinks and annual events as well as 'fun days' to ensure that everyone is always motivated.

  • 9. Would you recommend Grant Thornton to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because everyone is so friendly and the firm is understanding of your needs. They are there to develop you as a person and there are so many opportunities. Grant Thornton works with interesting clients which are growing so the job is never boring.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Grant Thornton?
  • Grant Thornton want you to show that you have a passion and understanding about the firm and that you WANT to work for them, if you have this motivation and the grades then you are half way there.
