My role is a Mechanical Technician Apprentice. On a day to day basis I work in various software packages like Revit, AutoCAD and blue beam. I interact with both engineers and other technicians.
I have leant lots of new skills whilst at Arup. I have become confident when using Revit and Auto Cad and I am also currently doing a level 3 btec and NVQ course which I am due to finish this year.
I enjoy working as a team within the group and it is good when a project gets issued on when it is completed and is on time.
I am always being asked to help out with various bits and pieces on various jobs and people I have worked with have made me fell like I am contributing to a project.
The training is well structured with a ration of 4 days working and 1 day spent at college. The split at work is meant to be 50% of my time doing engineering activities and 50% doing technician activities. However nearly all of my time is spent doing technician work.
The mentors for me are really good. They are always happy to help me out with what ever I need help on, and if they don't know they will find someone who does who is always happy to help as well.
Again everybody at work is happy to help and assist me with anything I need. All I have to do is ask and they will help me out.
This is really good. The travel costs to get into work are really expensive for me due to living outside of London it self. However the salary more than covers this and my living expenses and I am pleased with the rate of pay increase and this is quite motivating.
There are lots of activities outside of work like social gatherings and meet ups organized by Arup, to which anybody can go along to and enjoy themselves.
Yes
A good way to learn skills and get paid at the same time. The work is challenging and stimulates the mind. The ay is good and everybody at Arup is really friendly.
Be open with people and don't be afraid to speak up about something as everyone is really friendly. Before you go for your assessment day read up on your Maths a little bit.
