I am training to be a substation craftsperson. The job involves undertaking maintenance on substation equipment during outages and remedial work when equipment breaks. I also take part in general maintenace around the substation
I have learnt many new skills such as hand skills and use of power tools, electrical wiring and stripping engines. I have learnt how the different kit works and how to complete maintenances
I enjoy the programme as it is varied and consists of on site work and training courses. Some training courses are quite long, which makes some of the courses a bit less enjoyable as I have to stay away from home to complete the training
I feel very valued by natoinal grid. I have meetings with managers frequently to check on progress and any support needed. There is also a appreciate system used to send out e-cards or points rewards for doing well
The course is quite organised. We are given the timetable for the whole year, which is nice to know in advance when I have to be and where.
I receive some support.I have meetings with a trainer every 10 weeks to check on my progress, and whether I feel I need any extra support.
