My role mainly includes 2D / 3D design modelling, and issuing drawings which reflect the ideas presented to me from Engineers . It is an excellent route into the industry because right from the start you are given first hand experience and get the opportunity to work on some brilliant projects.
This job requires you to be formal, well organised, punctual and much more. Over the duration of the apprenticeship you never stop learning or developing skills. Skills such as; communication, team work, organisation etc.
Arup is a brilliant company to work for, and i thoroughly enjoy my job. You are made to feel welcome from day one and it took little time for me to settle in. I believe i have exceeded my own expectations when I think of where I started and what I knew about Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
I feel valued by my team and Arup. All my opinions and views are valued as much as anyone else's thoughts and views would be.
The programme is very well organised. Work colleagues constantly give feedback on my performance so that i can keep improving and learning as well as giving me hints and tips.
A lot of support is given throughout the programme. No matter the grade or job role every single one of my colleagues supports me and gives me advice.
My buddy (a second year apprentice), mentor and manager provide me with a lot of support and advice because they have been in the same position as me in the past and know how hard it is to become the new person in the industry with little experience.
Before i looked into apprenticeships i knew that i wanted to go into engineering as well as wanting to move away from home and see new places, experience new things at a young age and give myself priceless experience. once i had been successful in getting the job which meant it was down to me to find my own place and very fortunately enough for me, I was put into contact with the other successful candidate in Arup who I got on with really well when we first met on the interview day. Since then, we now rent our own place and split the total costs between us. I know that compared to other apprenticeships Arup offer a very competitive salary (which increases every 6 months and is worth noting) which just about covers my costs each month. The salary and progression Arup offers is fantastic.
There are a lot of opportunities outside of work. Arup offer many inter-company competitions such as football tournaments which are held each year (which are usually abroad), Walking/Cycling in The Peak District or monthly social events with the office group.
Yes
Arup is a very successful, supportive and exciting company to work for who are ever growing in numbers and continue to work on some of the biggest, mind blowing projects in the world.
The application process consists of assessment days and an interview. My advice to anyone applying to Arup would be to read up on the opportunities that are available and then decide which route you want to take within Arup. In order to stand out from a very strong group of interviewees make sure you prepare and know as much about the company and what your job role would include as well as 'selling' yourself and your capabilities.
