I applied for the 'Audit Associate' role when I left sixth form college and it was a great decision for me! Since joining Grant Thornton I have been given a great deal of responsibility which has really helped to develop me on a personal and professional level. On a daily basis I am usually out working within a team at a clients premises. Our job is to perform a variety of tests across the entities financial statements with the end results being to declare their statements true and fair. Meeting with new clients from various industries has meant I have built up a large amount of experience very quickly and with a number of audits under my belt has seen me being able to step up to the in-charge role on a number of audits very soon into my training contract.
Grant Thornton have supported me firstly through my AAT qualification which I spent two years studying towards. I will provided with sufficient study leave and support of senior staff. This really consolidated my understanding of Accountancy and of what I learn whilst studying at Sixth Form College. I am now studying towards the ACCA qualification which will see me become a certified chartered accountant next year! Time has flown since joining Grant Thornton and the qualifications I will have gained are going to be a key asset I will hold throughout my future career. Grant Thornton offer a number of internal training courses, the best ones being held at our own training manor in High Wycombe.
We have an excellent culture in our office which encourages a hard working ethic but also doesn't forget about our social desires. We have a very friendly and supportive network in our office which is always enhanced by regular social activities! It surpassed by expectations and I recommend the school leaver position to all those looking for a challenging and successful career in accountancy.
Through CLEARR recognition, a point system which allows colleagues to reward each other with monetary gift vouchers means that we often feel appreciated in what we do. I was also voted to be the CLEARR representative of the office at any early stage in my careers which allowed me to take on important tasks within the office and be a voice for the team and myself. I have always felt extremely valued.
The programme is very well structured and organised. You are aware of all qualifications you will be completing and what is expected of you within your training contract. Through regular appraisals, informal catch ups with managers and career development meetings you always feel like you have clear paths and objectives for the near future. There is also the opportunity to apply for a secondment abroad, to another location or another department. Working for a global firm makes these opportunities possible!
Kaplan Financial are an excellent training provider with dedication tutors at hand.
A wealth of support available within my office, colleagues, managements, HR and even the practice leader is extremely hands on and very involved.
My salary has increased annually from the moment I joined and has always been very competitive to local firms. It has allowed me to become very independent financially.
