I am an currently working as an associate within audit. Daily tasks involve working within teams out on client sites to carry out testing on financial statements. Responsibility is entrusted from an early age, with the onus on personal career development.
The firm provides training on a wide range of computer programs created specifically for the firm. As well as this, studying towards the AAT qualification provides a solid platform for the accountancy knowledge that underpins the audit testing. Working within teams and improving communication with both colleagues and clients are skills that develop naturally as more time is spent on site.
I have found the client work challenging yet enjoyable, as it is far different to anything I have ever done before. However it is worth remembering that all associates are likely to have been in the same situation, and so the support offered is fantastic. There is very much a culture of support and collaboration within the firm. One aspect I have found most enjoyable is getting the chance to network with a wide variety of clients across a number of sectors, giving you the chance to really get an in-depth look at how different companies operate.
The firm offers an internal recognition and reward system for those completing exemplary work and reflecting the values of the firm. Appraisals are completed at the end of every job to offer beneficial and constructive feedback, something which is key to individual development.
The in-depth induction process makes the transition into full-time work reasonably easy, and gives a great chance to further your understanding of the firm and network with fellow new starters. The AAT course is run on a day release basis, giving a balance both client and college work, with support offered from colleagues.
Kaplan provides all of the study materials for each module. As all of the tutors at the centre tend to teach a variety of professional qualifications, they are able to cope with a wide range of questions, regardless of topic. Tutors can be easily contacted through the central Kaplan website, and endeavour to get back in touch within a few days.
Managers are regularly available to offer support and are generally reliable in taking time out to discuss development and any other queries you may have. As well as this, new starters are allocated a buddy within the firm before joining to answer and questions and introduce you to the firm before the start date.
Salary is adequate to cover costs, and travel expenses can be reclaimed.
Each office will have a social committee responsible for organising social events. Furthermore, a local charity is supported and one day a year is dedicated to volunteering .
