  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am based in Product safety on 302 Hangar - Typhoon final assembly shop floor. My daily tasks are inputting mems on the SRR register and communicating with actionees and originators to close mems down. I also produce communications to send out to the company. I interact with most of the shop floor and office staff and any originators or actionees also. Im currently working on a project for flight development that entails creating a new single network for their current engineering support system that they use.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I feel valued highly as I get the chance to represent the company through Movement To Work events. I do sometimes feel though that I miss out on opportunities that other apprentices get to be part of. As an apprentice I do feel highly valued as we are told a lot we are the future of the company. That makes me feel proud.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship itself is mainly very structured. I have been given plenty of time to study and never feel like I don't have enough time to complete everything I am given. I receive quite a lot of support and help. I also have a mentor which I find very helpful. I have clear objectives for each placement.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I feel that sometimes I don't always get to spend as much time with my assessor as I would like. However I do know that this is down to the team of assessors being very small and the intake of apprentices is getting higher each year. We do get plenty of support throughout the business though and people are always willing to help.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very supportive, I am always encouraged to get involved in things and partake in extra training and activities wherever possible. I am always recognised for doing these things also.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As an apprentice I feel our salary for working here is so much better than other apprentices across the country. However, personally for me its still quite a struggle to meet costs on the salary. This is because I am a parent so I have many more costs to pay out and sometimes travel can be a nightmare for me so it tends to cost a lot. I am ok travelling to site I'm based at currently however once I move to the other site the travel will impact me greatly.

  • BAE are an absolutely fantastic company, they really do value and look after their staff greatly. They have fantastic training opportunities, career wise you can progress as much as you want and they support you along the way,

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Research as much as you can, if you can then speak to someone who works there and get advice. Be yourself during the interview. Take your time during the application form and really think about what to put in, any little thing you think will contribute is worth putting in there.
