I am an apprentice aircraft fitter. This involves construction, assembly, preperation and maintainance of military aircraft. I normaly work besides a fully qualified coleugue who will guide me on the task and answer any of my questions.
I now have a level 3 btec in aeronautical engineering. I can use a crane inside a hanger. I have learnt a crazy amount of hands on skills ranging from welding to creating a double sided brass and nylon hammer on a laythe. I have learnt how to start up aircraft and how to taxi them.
I love my programme. 99% of the people I meet are happy to see me and greet me into thier teams with open arms. I allways have work but never feel over-worked or struggling for work, and if I ever was I can just ask for more or less. BAE Sytems as a company are great to work for and offer an unbeliveable ammount of benefits.
As an apprentice working for BAE Sytems I feel like everyone I ever meet knows we are the future of the business. My colegues treat me with great respect and because of this i have great respect for them. I have even met our CEO and he spoke to us as if we where just extended family of his.
We are told a strict order in how our apprenticship will lay out and so far it has stuck to this plan to the day. I have had to divert from this programe every now and again and the programme is structured to compensate for this.
As much as I want. I have the phone number of my direct asessor who both keeps an eye on me and solves any of my problems. We also have meeting every four weeks to see how I am dong and if i need any help with anything.
Our head manager has helped me many tmes when i have had in issue with having time off due to sports injuries. He also sorted out a rehab course for me to go on after i had done this injury. He allways tries to gewt the best outcome for me and allways helps if i have an issue.
I know BAE Systems offers a very competitive salery, however I do struggle. I have moved out of my parents house once starting the apprenticship and found it hard to maintain a high quality of life on my first years wage. We get a pay rise every year so I am currently no doing so bad however I struggle to save any significant ammount of money each month as the money goes on more essential things.
There is a huge community within our work for out of work activities. There are sports clubs, teams and even lessons. There are also community support periods in my first year. My team and I had to re vitalise the 4.5 acre gardens of a local end of life care centre.
Yes
Its Great! The company is so vast there is a job for anyone. If you like working with your hands you can come and build aircraft, and if you are more inclined to work at a desk, there are thousands of different departments within the company that provide support, design and development to name a few areas.
Come to one of the carrees nights that we hold in football stadiums (normaly in october). Be honnest, dont say you have xyz when you dont. Revise the online compitency tests. Be both confident and relaxed when attending the inteview. Research the company. And finaly never feel under preasure as we are people who would like to hire you at the end of the day.
