As an apprentice with BAE systems I am currently working on the production of the Hawk. Choosing to progress as an electrician I am involved in the electrical installations and testing of the cockpit equipment.
Throughout the apprenteship I have learnt many new skills in the production, installation and testing of electrical wiring and componants. I have learnt methods of stripping and crimping to form electrical looms and methods of installation such as mechanical fastenings.
Throughout the program there has always been a good atmosphere during training. As there has never been a massive amount of pressure put on apprentices to perform at this stage it has proved to be an enjoyable course so far.
Working in the company as an apprentice you get to find out first hand just how much they value your skills and to what extent that they put the future of the company in our hands. I would say I feel very valued by BAE.
From the start of our apprenteship we have followed a well practiced structure which has enabled us to carry out and complete any nessesary training within the required timescales. The program has run smoothly throughout.
By holding 12 weekly reviews we have a good relationship with our training provider. It is at this point we can raise any concerns and ask for any additional support. Maybe a few more opportunites to be in contact with them inbetween these periods would prove helpful also.
On a daily basis I will recieve support from my employer. Whether it come from supervision in my local area, to help with the job I am working on or training staff providing supoort with NVQ work.
As far as apprentice wages go I appreciate that BAE systems offer a very reasonable salary. As I live locally I am fortunate to still have living arrangements with my parents therfore my salary isn't required to cover any rent. It is adequate however to cover my travel costs.
Throughout the apprenteship there has been a good amount of opportunities to get involved with external events. From careers fairs to apprentice exchange programs which offer the opportunity to travel overseas. I have been involved with a number of these and have found them extreamly valuable experiences!
Yes
With BAE systems you get an extreamly good working environment where training is delivered to a high standard. The company look after their employees extreamly well and there are many opportunities to develop and progress in your career, to find all that within one company is great!
If applying to BAE systems I would recommend a good background in maths and physics, these will help you with the engineering courses. Take time with your inital written application as they have thousands of applications each year so ther standard is set quite high. On inerview days be yourself as much as you can, BAE like diversity in their workfoce!
