I am currently working in a Project Control team within Naval Base Services providing support to Programme Managers and their respective Project Managers. Support provided includes updating schedules, producing and compiling end of month reports.
In my current placement I have developed my skills in Microsoft Project and the functions within the program. In my previous placements I haven't had much exposure of the software so have been able to develop my skills. I have also attended a 2 day Health and Safety course to raise awareness of certain issues that may present itself within Portsmouth Naval Base.
It provides a great opportunity to move around the business in 12 month placements learning new skills. The company is very encouraging in developing individuals and actively encourages people to attend courses and engage with training material in order to broaden knowledge bases.
I feel very valued as a Higher Apprentice. I don't feel like people talk down to me and I feel as though any points that I raise are listened to and respected.
We had some issues with the training provider as we were having different lecturers each week and the communication wasn't adequate between the college and lecturers as we were finding that the lecturers weren't always sure what content had been covered in the previous weeks sessions. We now have a lecturer who we have every week and our sessions are excellent and well structured.
The tutor is very supportive and is very contactable outside of our college time to provide support and guidance where necessary. I don't really need to contact the college directly that often so don't have any issues of note in that area.
I receive and adequate amount of support from my function manager as well as my placement manager in terms of managing college work alongside my day to day work in my placement.
My salary is absolutely fine with my current situation, I am currently still living at home but saving to purchase my own place, with my current salary I am able to save an adequate amount of money each month to save for this. I am able to cover travel and social costs comfortably and I live in a easy commutable distance to my workplace.
There are regular opportunities to take part in additional activities outside of work, we are constantly given chances to participate in STEM activities at local schools/colleges in promoting the apprenticeship schemes on offer at BAE Systems. We also get the opportunity to attend conferences too which is a great way to meet different people around the business who we wouldn't usually cross paths with.
Yes
BAE Systems is a fantastic company to develop your skills and to work on some really interesting projects. The apprenticeships schemes that they offer enable you to develop key skills that will stand you in good stead when you fulfil a permanent role on completion of the apprenticeship scheme.
The application process can seem quite a long process but stay patient with it as it'll be worth it in the end! Stay relaxed in the interviews, I know it's easier said than done but going into the interview relaxed and well hydrated will help.
