Engineering Technician Apprentice - Electrical Integration of the electrical containment in the 3D CAD model and routing of cables in a cable management database. Must communicate with designers of various disciplines on a daily basis to negotiate the arrangement of the systems. must communicate with engineers regularly to ensure information is current and correct. Must communicate occasionally with external suppliers to ensure clarity in our processes.
I have developed my electrical knowledge in the past year as well as increased responsibility for my own work. I have extensively used new software and learned more about the processes I must adhere to.
I do enjoy my programme and I enjoy my role.
This can vary depending on where you are placed. Most departments are good and seeing the value of apprentices however some are guilty of providing jobs that are not a reflection of real work.
The structure of my programme seems to change year on year. I am aware that this could be because of improvements being made however I feel my education has suffered from lack of continuity. For example, my year group has received no formal ship building training and as far as I aware, we are the only year group to have experienced this. This has been raised as an issue and following years have received this, however my group still have not.
in any case where I may have needed support, my training provider has been at hand. I am very happy with my level of support.
My employer has also shown support at various points, I am also happy with this level.
There have been recent improvements to salary. I have quite a high expenditure with a house and car to pay for and I manage this monthly. I am aware that we are still paid significantly less than other apprentices on similar programmes in different companies, and we also do not have the option to complete our apprenticeship early like others, however I have no major complaints about salary.
there are opportunities to partake in STEM activities, many award opportunities, networking events and various other opportunities available.
Yes
I would and have recommended BAE. This is because I feel the company is making positive changes to its apprenticeship programmes and I feel that the issues I faced have been improved for following years.
I would advice you to research the company and be clued up on recent contracts we have been involved in. Be confident, approachable and friendly.
