I am a Project Managment higher apprentice, within this role I work as part of a team in 4 month placemnets around the business. Within these different teams i get involved in there day to day work as well as any extra projects they are involved in inorder to progress my development and get a taste of many areas of the business. My general day to day work includes holding meetings, updating metrics, working to processes and keeping risks logged and up to date.
I have learned many new skills and developed many existing ones while on the apprentiship. The skills that i have developed and learned through my apprentiship are stakeholder managment, communication, risk managment, managing schedule/scope producing work to a high quality.
I enjoy my programme alot as not only does it let me develop through working within the daily business life i also get to move around alot in the business giving me preperation for when i leave the programme. By working with new people and doing different jobs regularly it keeps it spontanious and exciting. I also enjoy being able to do my degree at the same time as i get to academically learn while learning the business life.
I feel valued within the teams i work in as i get responsibility through tasks that contribute to the teams overall work and to the business. Sometimes i can feel less valued as eccencially i am learning and developing however i am assured that all the learning i am doing now is valued as it will become useful in the furture after the programme and benefit the business.
The programme I am on is very structured and organised as all of my placements in the business are mapped out to ensure i get a taste of all the key areas i need to learn about project managment and to ensure i get the correcet competencies i need to ahve after i leave the programme.
I recieve alot of support from my training provider both from my placement teams and from the early careers department. They are both very understanding of my development and are willing to invest the time and effort in to support me on the programme.
I recieve alot of support from my employer due to the structure of my training. My employer has set up an early careers department to help look after the programme and me on my journey through the business giving me support on any issues and quieries i may have.
It is adequate in meeting my costs and has opened up more opportunities for myself. It also meets my costs as i have the opportunity to increase my salary based on my performance in the programme.
There are opportunities outside of work through 'stretch' assignments. These are assignments that members of the programme run that are seperate from every day working life but also benefit and promote the buisiness such as fundays, charity events and sporting events.
Yes
The business has long term work and this provides security to the job and role you are doing. The business fully supports any learning and development and provides lots of opportunities to progress in your career. The business is also interesting and can make coming to work fun.
The advise that i would give for anyone applying to bae systems would be to do your homework and research the business to ensure that you know were the business operates and what products it produces. I would also recomend being enthusiasitc about career development and understand that there are lots of development opportunities within the business.
