I am now building experience and learning in my exit role from the HA scheme. I review construction records to ensure that all materials are traceable to source (where required) and to ensure that the product is built to the quality standard agreed by the customer. I still attend college, and am looking forward to moving from HNC to HND in the forthcoming academic year.
I have increased my skills in critically analysing engineering and quality requirements, being able to ask exactly the correct question is vital to my role. My understanding of engineering and manufacturing engineering has developed, although I had some engineering experience before taking on this apprenticeship. Despite being (considered) a mature student I still look forward to my college days. Historically I've not always been a people person, but I find that I'm improving my 'soft' skills in working with such a dedicated and knowledgeable team.
This apprenticeship has changed and enhanced my career beyond measure. I never fully know the challenges which await me, but I never avoid meeting them head-on. This is a new and improved attitude toward work for me, and I don't want that to change.
I can convinced that BAE Systems would be a poorer place without myself and my peers on the same programme. Many managers say they value the energy and enthusiasm of apprentices, and I truly believe they mean every word. I have complete faith and trust in the company, and would be reluctant to leave when I am due to retire.
The programme is reasonably well structured, and I find it rewarding that improvements are being made following consultation with myself and my peers. It shows there is a mutual exchange of trust between the company nd its apprentices, to the benefit of both.
The tutors and staff of Blackpool and The Fylde college have (to my mind) set the benchmark in the quality of training and tutoring provided. Although I attend college one day per week, the tutors are available by email five days per week and I have made use of that from time to time. It is difficult to see how the level of support here could be improved.
I consider myself fortunate to be working with a small but highly focussed team, no question from me is too great or too small. My mentors and managers value my input and take it seriously.
Currently the salary is reasonable, and it certainly covers my costs. The programme of performance reviews gives me an opportunity to acheive a modest bonus payment twice per year.
The company supports and encourages its employees to become STEM Ambassadors. I have taken this opportunity to improve my networking as well as influence young people toward considering a career in engineering. I enjoy teaching, particularly science and engineering principles, although I could not do that as a full-time career. To be able to take a small number of days out of work (with BAE System's full support) provides a refreshing change.
Yes
I have no doubts about the commitment of the company toward its apprentices, and anyone looking for an apprenticeship would be a fool to ignore the potential available.
Work hard but enjoy yourself while doing it. Embrace your weaknesses as well as your strengths. Leave no opportunity undisturbed or unexplored.
