  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Project Management trainee (Higher apprentice) and as part of that scheme with BAE systems I have the opportunity to move around to different parts of the business every 2 weeks, this means that I can get a wide range of skills from the different roles I take on, so far I have worked with Nuclear Safety and Project Controls which have both been interesting and insightful.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As part of my scheme I attend college, where I study for a Foundation Degree in project management which allows me to learn many skills that I am able to apply in a work setting, which also gives me the opportunity to gain a lot of work experience. BAE Systems also provides many on site courses on things like, Project Management, Safety etc.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far I am enjoying my programme, it has allowed me to develop my personal and professional skills, and has allowed me to network, to create a large group of friends who are on the same course as well as make connections higher up in the business, and has given me a number of opportunities that I could not have had if not for BAE Systems.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • Right from the start you are given a large amount of responsibility, not only in the fact that you can choose your own working hours (As long as you work core hours) but also because you handle a lo of sensitive information and that in your placements you are given objectives that can genuinely affect the business for the better.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is an organisational framework that is adhered to here at BAE Systems, all trainee schemes have, a Line Manager (someone who manages your holidays, wage, and is your actual manager), A functional Manager (someone who arranges your placements and is there to give you specific support on your scheme (Project Management in my case)), and Placement Manager (This changes every 4 months depending on your scheme, placement managers are responsible for your work flow, and objectives.).

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • While the training provider does teach you everything you will need to know for any assignments or exams there is an underlying issue with the organisation, some days I feel are wasted sitting around tables for hours, but you will need to make sure you make the most of your time.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Right from the start there is a lot of support available to you from BAE Systems, before you even begin the scheme you are assigned a "Buddy" who is there to answer any questions and provide any support that you may need as you begin, you are also provided a Mentor, Line Manager, Functional Manager, and an "Early Careers Team", who are all there to support you.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary easily suits my needs and has allowed me to get a brand new car on finance as well as other things. For anyone thinking of moving away from home to work for BAE Systems may need to get a house or a flat share initially, however every 6 months there is the opportunity to have a raise of £1200.

    9/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The Barrow In Furness site, where I am situated sits just outside of the Lake District, which gives a great opportunity for hiking, camping, rafting and other activities. There are also opportunities in Barrow and Ulverston, with plenty of pubs, bars, and cinema, bowling etc.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it is a large company that holds many opportunities for growth and development, as well as providing a good wage and a good working environment.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I would recommend doing your research on BAE Systems as a global company, many people think it is only based in the UK, but it isn't, and research the job role you are going for. I'd also recommend asking questions of the interviewers.
