My role is a signal apprentice and on a day to day basis I am learning the knowledge and skills for me to be able to go to my depot at the end of the year and join in with the work required there. Day to day lessons can range from theory and computer work to doing practical lessons such as wiring to building electronic circuit boards that work the same way a level crossing simulation or piano.
I have learnt a variety of new skills such as technical ones, for example soldering and lots of wiring techniques as well as lots of railway theory . Also I have learnt how too prove myself as a leader through the ILM course. This has enabled me to improve my confidence and now how to get the best from a team.
The programme has been very enjoyable. It has provided me with new skills that I can take into the work place but also enabled me to be more social and confident. There is a variety of activities available both provided internally but with scope to expand this to the wider area. A very interesting, challenging, but most importantly enjoyable programme.
I feel very valued by Network Rail. They car every much about their employees especially the apprentices as we are seen as the future for the company. They are always willing to help and will go out of their way to aid you whatever the problem. They are also all for rewarding for good work and excellent effort which is always a bonus
The programme is very organised and structured in a way that benefits. The courses done are varied and enables new techniques to be learnt and executed on a regular basis. Theory work is balanced out with practical so that there is not an overload of work.
There is lots of support from all avenues. They are very willing to teach and guide so that everyone understands what they are doing and what is expected of them. They go out of their way if you need help and will always give an extra hand if needed.
I receive a lot of support as they are always available if needed. Any questions or problems are dealt with quickly and accordingly. They also offer extra help if required and will go out of their way if it is of benefit to you.
The salary is great and will only improve. As food and accommodation is already paid for, the salary covers any other expense that I may have with lots extra. They also pay for most travel expenses as well.
There are lots of opportunities outside of work to be involved in societies and unions for example to help me in the future to expand on knowledge as well a helping to further my skills. There are also opportunities to become involved with sport with the football team as well as the on site facilities such as the gym and squash courts. If this is not your thing then there are pool tables and dart boards available as well. There are many opportunities to visit the local area and take part in local events.
Yes
They are a company that values their employees very much. They enable a lot of opportunities to expand not only with knowledge and skills but also as an individual. They treat everyone the same and values the difference that we will make in years to come.
Just be yourself and always try your best. Regardless of your ability, they will cater for you and will always help you. You will thrive within the company and will become a more independent, skilful and knowledgable person that will make a difference to the country and the railway.
