Product Definition engineer working in the aerospace industry. My role as a PDE involves modelling components and then creating drawings from these, using a system called Siemens NX. Once checked, the drawings can be used in manufacture.
Prior to the training I received on the software, I had no experience using 3D CAD. I have therefore developed my skills on the software. 3D Modelling has helped me understand the steps and procedures when actually manufacturing a part.
I thoroughly enjoy the programme so far. The first year of training was a good experience as you learnt new skills such as machining (e.g. turning, milling), welding, electrical, electronics, business improvement techniques, fitting and assembly techniques. Once, we learn these basic engineering principles, apprentices are specifically trained in their day to day job, and my job as a PD engineer is very enjoyable.
As an apprentice I feel highly valued by RR. If a company is willing to invest as much money as they do in an individual, you do feel both valued and honoured to work for such a prestigious company.
A RR apprenticeship is considered one of the best in the world. Therefore, it is very well structured and you know where you are supposed to be and at what time. The communication is very good between Employer and Employee. In terms of course material, the scheme is well structured; the first year gets you to understand basic engineering principles and from then onwards, you are guided along a pathway which suits your job.
As apprentices, we have ADL's or apprentice development leaders who guide and support you through your program. Whenever I have an issue or need support, I can always rely on my ADL.
See question 6A. As well as having alot of support from your ADL, as an apprentice or employee, support is all around you. For this reason, I would say that I recieve very good support from my employer.
Costs as in Living costs?? - As an apprenice at Rolls-Royce, the salary is very competetive. There are not many other Apprenticeships that pay as well and offer as good a course as Rolls-Royce. With the benefit of a pension and shares in the company, the package is also very worth while from a financial point of view.
A Rolls-Royce apprenticeship can take you anywhere in the engineering world. For that reason, there are hundreds of oppertunities outside of work.
Yes
Rolls-Royce is one of the best engineering companies worldwide. As an appretice, you can gain both practical and acedemic experience. A benefit you cannot gain from going to college alone. As explained in previous questions, RR offers a competetive salary and state of the art learning facilites.
Work hard, show a keen interset in engineering and technology and enjoy the experience.
