As a Flying Start you come into PwC during the audit busy season. You are immediately allocated to teams working on the audit of various clients. You are required to interact with members of the client finance team to complete the work assigned to you. The work is very team-focused.
My communication skills have increased through the ACA qualification. I'm regularly required to talk to people, from the client team to internal PwC staff. I have also gained more confidence as a result. My ICT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel has become much better.
My time spent between university and out on placement at PwC is hard work and can be extremely challenging at times, however it allows me to push myself, as high standards are expected when working for a top professional firm. My cohort at university are all very close-knit so that is great as there is a good support network for me.
Feedback received through my time at PwC lets me know that the work I do is appreciated by the teams in which I work. Internal recognition prizes are given to deserving candidates in the form of retail vouchers.
The programme is very well structured, adequate training is provided before we begin working for PwC, this is provided by staff who work at the firm, therefore they are able to provide insights into working for PwC. There is a really good support system from both the university and PwC, as everyone is allocated a personal tutor, a people manager, a buddy and Flying Start support staff.
My personal tutor is always on hand to answer any questions, should I have any. He makes himself available by email or by telephone and is genuinely interested in my progress whilst on placement.
There are various support networks offered by PwC whilst on placement. My buddy, a more senior member at the firm provides are great informal support and my people manager is able to help me on a more formal level. They are both on hand at all times, should I need any help or guidance whilst on placement.
Working in London means that the cost of living is very high. PwC cover the costs of our accommodation whilst on placement, however we have to pay for our travel costs to commute to work and all other daily living costs. The salary is competitive.
PwC involves itself in the community and has fundraising charity days in the local area. However as my placement is during the audit busy season I am not there to partake in these events. There are plenty of office socials and drinks events during the year to network with colleagues.
