My role as an apprentice includes learning how to work with and operate machines within the sector I am working. I will start off over watching and eventually when I am trained and competent operate by myself. As well as learning different processes and machines I have NVQ work to achieve in which I make log write ups of what I've been doing etc.
As well as learning many skills such as machine knowledge and process procedures I have also learned lots from college. For example at college I learned about materials, further maths and mechanical principles, electronics, engineering drawing, CAD design, CNC program writing, turning, milling and fitting. Without the apprenticeship I may never of come across and learnt about a of these subjects. My existing skills of design from school have been improved massively and more certification to back that up as well as my mathematic and physics knowledge. All in all I have learnt a great deal an improved massively over my time as an apprentice.
I enjoy the programme very much so, I have had a few rough patches personally whilst on my apprenticeship which made it hard but have pushed through and am getting on well and enjoying myself.
At Rolls-Royce apprentices are extremely well valued and treated the same as any other worker in the company. The give you mutual respect and expect you to work and behave in a appropriate manner and make you feel important. The HR are outstanding and go above and beyond to help resolve any issue big or small. You feel relieved to have such an understanding and caring team working with you.
The apprectiship is based on trust I find, you have a lot of freedom with your programme and must make the most of it. College and work is organised you have a set rotor and guide to where you will be working and its up to you to follow it. You have regular progress reviews in which you are assessed and give feedback etc. The structure is good I think.
There is a great deal of support there is constant communication and any problems are easy to resolve.
Again like I have said before the HR are fantastic including the managers, ADL and all the workers. I fins I get on well with everyone and am comfortable talking to anyone and have a lot of support.
The salary package is very reasonable and improves fairly I find, you have more than enough to cover bills and still enjoy your self and be independent.
There is work football and social events in which everyone is welcome. There is always events and conventions going on in which we are welcome to take part. We have done work with local schools organising activity days which have been really rewarding.
Yes
in my opinion there isn't a better valued or paid apprenticeship out there and working for such a big and well established company is very satisfying.
go out your way to achieve as high possible grades you can achieve at school or college as well as good attendance and punctuality. You need to stand out from the crowd and build and impressive portfolio in which you are proud of and make sure to show your interest and enthusiasm.
