My apprenticeship is in pressure, control and storage in the gas newtwork in east anglia. My day to day role involves going to college in chester to study mechinical engineering, traing at National Grids acedemy in Eakring and on site training all over Cambridgeshire, Essex and suffolk. Its a 3 year apprentiship with the majority of traing taking place over the first 2 years and the final year is mainly on site which will involve assesments on the gas network.
As i was 21 when i started this apprenticeship my scholl days seemed many moons ago, so for me i have developed my learning and listening skills as i have not been in a learning/college environment for a good number of years. National Grid offers endless amounts of support and this change of path back into learning has been a smooth process.
I enjoy my program a huge amount, i actully enjoy my job and look forward to going to work! I think this enjoyment comes from doing different things on a day by day, week by week this seems to always keep me intrested in what im doing. I would recommend this apprenticeship to anyone that was thinking of doing it.
I feel very valued by National Grid it feels more like you are apart of a family rather than a company, because national grid invest so much money into us and our training it makes you feel very valued, we are always made to feel like we are the future of the company which is a nice feeling.
Considering we have to travel all around the country and stay in different hotel i have never had a problem with how orginised National Grid are, the program is also structured in a way that college, traing and time of site is split up throught the year rather than in huge block, i personally love this as it makes the program very intresting.
I recieve huge amounts of support from my traing provider if i needed it, we can contact them via eamil and even telephone at any point, we also have personal reviews on a regular basis and see our program managers around on a daily basis at the acedemy.
We recieve alot of sipport from our employer as they want us to achive within the compnay, they also offer personal support.
The salary is one of the best if not the best of all apprenticeships i looked at, the starting wage was more than my pay working full time in a gym! aslo we do not have to pay for any travel, food, accomidation because these are all covered by National Grid so the pay benifits are excellent.
There is always stuff to do outside of work, at the acedmey in eakring for example there is a 5 a side pitch, gym and lounge with sky sports ect. We also stay at a hotel that has a swimming pool and gym so there is always somthing to keep you busy! we also often go bowling and cinema on week nights.
Yes
It is honestly the best thing i have done, not only for the pay but there is huge potential to move up through the company and if you show good intensions they will support you as much as possible! a excellent apprenticeship.
Definatly apply at a younger age, my only regret was that i didnt know about the apprenticeship at a younger age say 18
