I am an Electrification and Plant apprentice, and on a day to day basis I am appointed to a team and travel throughout our area to carry out maintenance within the rail network. Externally I speak to suppliers and customers, and my responsibilities are to ensure that I complete my work to the best of my ability.
Yes, I have learnt lots of new information and skills with regard to my day-to-day job. I continue to learn whilst on the job and learn from my colleagues. In my first year, I have learnt so much knowledge that will help me throughout my life.
I really enjoy going to study every day, and I feel I have learnt a lot which is going to help me throughout my career. My company is extremely good and continue to support me throughout my development.
I feel really valued, as my manager always asks how I am and how I am doing in my studies. I am due to receive a bonus at the end of the year for completing my first year, and I believe this shows good appreciation from the company as a whole as we are looked upon to be the future of the railway.
Our programme has been conducted extremely well and I have been pleased with every aspect of it. I have particularly enjoyed both the NVQ practical work and the BTEC academic work, as they both relate to each other and I can see where I will use them in my career.
My training provider has been excellent, whenever I have needed any help or assistance they have always been there for me, and gone the extra mile if needed.
My employer is also brilliant, we have been supported very well by both the year 1 manager and the girls in the admin office, who are always there to talk to and help if it is needed.
I feel the package is very good as we are provided with accommodation and three meals a day. There is also a gym which we can use on site, and we are provided with a bus to and from work everyday. Our wages on top of this are also good, as we do not really need to spend anything.
We have been given the opportunity to attend events around our area, including the local 10K and half marathon. We also are able to go to the gym, go into the town and also take the foot ferry to Portsmouth.

I have recommended the apprenticeship to my friends who have wanted to get into electrical engineering but have not been able to thus far. I have said it is a fantastic opportunity within a good company that values you and will support your development throughout your career.
I would say to be confident, provide evidence of any projects that you may have completed, ensure you carry out your research on the company and present yourself well. This is an excellent opportunity, and has been the best decision that I have ever made.
