  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a PC&S apprentice combining training up at Eakring with on the job experience in Liverpool. I am also completing a BTEC in Mechancical Engineering. All this training is in order to become a qualified technician. This will involve adjust pressures and operating and maintaining National Grid's assets.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of skills since I started. We have completed courses in things such as First Aid and then in the workshop we have been doing P.E.O. This involves hand skills and getting used to using tools which has been very benefical. We have also done a pipework course learning how to bend pipe and assemble pipework. In my on the job experience I have learnt skills in working together as a team to complete jobs.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thorouhgly enjoyed the programme so far and what it has involved. It has challenged and I am learning new things all the time.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?
  • I feel very valued by National Grid. There are lots of opportunities for me within the company and the benefits in place are another great aspect to the company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured well with a mixture of being away and at home. We are constantly updated on changes to our timetable so we always know where we are and when.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive plenty of support from the training providers. They are always approachable if I have any problems or questions and the training is delivered to a very high standard.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • National Grid as a company are also very supportive. They provide us with laptops and phones to help with our work and again if there are any issues or problems there is always someone to talk to about it within the company.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary/package meets my costs very well. We are well paid and the pay rises in place act as motivation for me within the job.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities to socialise with my colleagues outside of work when we are away in the leisure facilities at Eakring. The technicicans I work with on site have also told me that they are always available to contact outside of work hours if I have any questions or problems. This is very beneficial for me.

  • 9. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a hugely successful company and one that looks after its employees. It is a job for life and there are always opportunities to better yourself and move up in the compnay. The money is also very good especially as an apprentice.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Do a lot of research on the company. Find out as much about the compnay as you can in terms of what they do. Make sure you are well prepared for everything that the application process presents.
