My job title is Pressure Control and Storage Apprentice and my role in national grid is mainly maintenance. My day to day tasks include maintaining national grid equipment so generally operate and maintain the service so there is always gas flowing to customers.
I have gained a number of different qualification during this apprenticeship mainly things to do with my job recently I have been doing a Engineering Betec which will come in handy for this job and others if i decide to leave.
I enjoy the programme greatly, i have learnt a lot and have met many people who i enjoy working with greatly. I enjoy the fact that i am always outside doing work and getting my hands dirty as i prefer hands on learning which this programme provides.
I feel very valued especially by my manager who always asks how im doing and the how the programme is going. He also lets me know how vital i am to the network once i am qualified as i am one of few who live in central london.
I believe the programme is well structured there is room for improvements as any big company managing 100 or so apprentices is very hard but national grid do try there best and if there is any problems it is easy to get a hold of the programme manager and have things sorted.
I receive as much support is i need. During courses the trainers are more than happy to help with any issues and when I go on site my managers, mentor and work colleges are always there to provide support.
National Grid always provide as much support as you need. If you struggle with anything national Grid has many support groups that are ready to help and free of charge.
The salary package is very good and since I live in central london i also get london weighting allowance which helps a lot as well.
There are many opportunities outside of work and we always receive e-mails notifying us of those opportunities.
Yes
I have enjoyed the course a lot and have already helped with getting a friend in as an emergency response apprentice and he is enjoying working for national grid as much as i am.
National grid is an amazing company to work for as such the company gets a lot of applications the only advice i can give is apply early and provide all evidence as soon possible.
