My role as an Electrical apprentice requires me to learn, develop and widen my knowledge on the electrical side of the submarines which could be anything from lighting to fuse panels. I have to be able to understand drawings and be organised with regards to the tools and equipment I need for each job to ensure I complete the job as required. I complete a good to go before each job and am part of a toolbox talk every morning and after dinner, this is to ensure we all know out roles and responsibilities of the day.
I have learnt how to terminate devices which are specific to the submarine whereas beforehand I only had knowledge on domestic electrical equipment. I have also learnt how to use a variety of machine i.e. bansaws, pedestral drills and tools such as heat guns, crimping and banding tools. Not only have I developed physical skills, I have also become more confident and competent within my job role.
I really enjoy the programme that I am doing as not only do you get the chance to learn new skills and develop current techniques and understanding, I also feel safe within the environment and never feel like I can't go to anyone if I have a problem.
I feel very valued by BAE systems as they take the time and effort to speak to you individually and make you feel welcome, but most importantly they make you feel safe within the work place. Also, they reward you when you have achieved something great i.e. apprentice of the month and I believe this is a great confidence booster that will make an individual feel valued by the company too.
The organisation and structure of the programme overall is well planned and thought out. College is set out so that it is convenient and fits in well with everybodies timetables.
My training provider ensures that I have as much help and support as I need. For example, if I am struggling with someone they will go out of their way to make sure that the situation is solved and so that I no longer have to worry or even struggle.
I receive enough support and encouragement from my employer as I need. If I am ever in doubt, worrying or struggling at all then without any hassle something is done about it.
My salary meets my costs very well. Although I am good with my money anyhow, my salary provides me with enough money to get by as well as allowing me to save and put into my compant shares.
The company provides various opportunities outside of work. These opportunities may be things such as sports events against workers, charity events that are put on through the company but set out of work or could be general gatherings on special occassions i.e. christmas which gives the opportunity to meet and greet new people.
Yes
It is a great company to work for which provides you with the opportunity to learn and develop skills both mentally and physically. They provide various opportunities both inside and out of work and they're high on health and safety which makes you feel more at ease and safe within the working environment.
Take the time to research the company before applying so that when it comes to the interview stage you looked interested and keen. Also, work hard and put the effort in and you will get as much effort back from the company as you give.
