  • My role is an apprentice, on a day to day basis I sit in classroom and learn the fundamentals of railway engineering.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt many new skills within the railway engineering industry, ranging from the basics to slightly more developed training.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • on a day to day basis I thoroughly enjoy what I do here. However, there are some days where it is terribly boring and feels like a waste of time as we are sat around doing nothing.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Network Rail?
  • I feel very valued by network rail as we are constantly told how we are the future of the company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The scheme is extremely organised thanks to the wonderful work of sam lipsham in the office. She deserves a raise.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A hell of a lot of support is given to us apprentices from the instructors with both practical and written work.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot as there are many things in place to support us, for example the apprentice support officers are always there for when you need them.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I feel like the pay is too low, yes we have everything provided for (food/accommodation) however, the food is to a poor standard so you are forced to spend money on outside catering. The accommodation was bigged up to have loads of activities to do where in reality there is nothing to do, so you are forced to then spend hundreds a month on traveling home just to be able to have an enjoyable weekend that doesnt drag out for what feels like 2 years rather than 2 days.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes I am a keen member of the USFL football team, where we have won the league for the second year in a row.

  • Yes

  • Because I would like them to have the same opportunities to grow, and progress like I have.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • To ensure that you do your best and put your all into it as you get out what you put into it.
