Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains create the F1 power units for Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, Williams F1, Force India and Manor F1. I am an apprentice within the manufacturing department and I'm currently working with the team machining engine components on a CNC milling machine.
Since starting my apprenticeship in August 2015 I have learnt so many new skills, all of which I'm able to put into practice each day at work. For example, I had never worked on a CNC machine before but observed the skilled machinists here and listened to the advice they gave me and I can now confidently run programs with little guidance.
I really enjoy my apprenticeship here at HPP. I like that you get to move around to different departments within manufacturing and can see all the different components and learn how they are machined.
I feel like a regular member of the HPP team. You don't really get treated like an apprentice here which is great as it makes you feel more comfortable in the working environment. But of course, whenever you need help there's always someone around to give it.
The programme is well organised considering how busy it gets here pre-season. The rotation plan might shuffle around slightly according to the business needs but they'll always ensure that you receive a good amount of time within each section.
I meet up with my training provider quite often to review my NVQ progress. It's good as he keeps track of everything and helps to set targets too.
You receive a lot of support from the co-workers here. Whenever I need help there's always someone willing to give me a hand. A lot of the people on the manufacturing floor were actually apprentices themselves at one point so know what its like to go through one.
To be honest, I didn't come to HPP because of the salary. I came here because I love F1 and wanted a challenging and dynamic working environment, which is exactly what you get here. It's just an added bonus that the salary here is really good for an apprentice.
No, not really.
Yes
It's a dynamic work place with lots of friendly people who give you the support when needed. Plus it's F1 - not only that but you'll be working for the Double Formula One world championship team!
Try and get some engineering based work experience before applying if possible as this will show you are keen to work in the industry.
