  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a tax analyst within the indirect tax service line (VAT), as part of my day to day role I draft emails to clients, undertake research in respect of target clients and I have had involvement with more technical projects. Since starting I have been given more responsibility than expected at such a junior level which has been great for my development both professionally and in confidence. A large part of my role has been client facing, interacting with clients both over email and at meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • We frequently attend internal training courses to develop tax knowledge and I begin my ACA/CTA qualification later this year. Where I have identified any additional courses of relevance to my role my team have been happy for me to attend. My communication skills and confidence have also developed since starting.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I did not expect to be interacting with clients at such an early stage which has been great. Further the responsibility I have been given since joining allows me to actively manage my workload. Overall I do enjoy my programme and it has exceeded my expectations.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Deloitte?
  • The level of investment that has been put into my career from starting is exceptional, both by my team and by the firm on a whole, in particular my appraiser. People understand if you have too much work on to accept any more and where you have done a good job you will be thanked sincerely. The feedback I have been provided with has been beneficial to my development and being thanked personally by a client for a deliverable personally was a particular highlight.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The development stages are very well structured, the programme has a dedicated pathway so that I can track my progress against where I should be and where I need to be to progress through the firm. I have regular meetings with my appraiser to discuss where I am doing well and where improvement could be made which helps me keep on track. Overall I think the process has been well organised.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have not began my professional qualification as of yet, but in respect of the internal courses I feel as though we have been provided with good support. The team I work for provide a large amount of support and they are always happy to take time out of their day to explain any questions I have.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a good level of support from my employer, my team lead is quick to pick up on any issues that may arise and address them directly. My appraiser has also been a great support investing a large amount of time into my career. As above, people are always happy to answer any questions you have and spend time talking you through something which is great.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is quick to progress which is good to aim for promotion, as I do not live t home my living costs and travel costs are slightly higher but that has allowed me to manage my money.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Social opportunities are great, we have monthly drinks with the whole office and there are numerous sports activities that also take place. I have been able to volunteer at the Emirates stadium at a careers event and taken part in a 10K run with members of the team. I still have time to keep up with activities I undertook prior to working such as going to the gym etc.

  • 9. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The support you receive is great, I am treated exactly the same as the two graduates in my year are which is nice. The progression opportunities are great and well structured so you know what you are required to do in order to meet the criteria for promotion. Within tax we attended a 3 week 'tax academy' with all the UK new tax joiners to prepare us for the job which was a great experience and helped to build a vast network. Opportunities to work for overseas Deloitte firms also arise which is something I would like to look into in the future.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • I used forums to see what others were saying about there recruitment process and how to prepare, this included researching about the company and your service line, understanding the qualifications you'll be getting and explaining why you feel like you are right for the role. Although I think they have changed the process, both of my interviews were relatively relaxed and the interviewers were both great in calming my nerves.
