Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Reading through project communications and saving into split out folders within the server as back up. Managing Subcontract packages - assessing their work and managing their account. Looking after internal packages. Measuring works to be undertaken or works completed. Discussing with members of the team how progress is going. Looking after all the plant equipment on site forecasting future costs and trying to keep within budget.
I am working towards a degree in Quantity Surveying. I attend training as part of the cadet program that helps develop my skills most recently I attended a course titled 'building my influence' this helped develop my presentation skills and interpersonal skills. I am attending a first aid course in the near future. I have learnt many practical skills whilst working on site.
Overall I am enjoying the program both my uni work and my role on my current project. There have been tough parts but overall it has been a positive experience so far. I am part of a good team at my current project and enjoy working here. Some parts of the program where not as expected but mostly it has lived up to my expectations.
I feel valued by my commercial team here at my project, I feel that I am valued by Laing O'Rourke as they put a lot of effort in the training programs, however it sometimes feels like you are a small part in a big machine.
The program is very well structured it is clearly laid out with development modules 3 times a year. As well as an accompanying log book to record the skills you develop along the way.
I receive a lot of training from Laing O'Rourke, with cadet training modules and additional courses I am encouraged to take. I also receive a lot of support from my current line manager who is very helpful when dealing with work that I may not have come across before.

My Salary covers my travel costs and my typical monthly expenditure however I am always short of money at the end of the month
There are plenty of opportunities to socialise with work colleagues outside of work as there are often social events organised by the site team.
Yes
The cadet program at Laing O'Rourke is a great way to gain practical work experience whilst also allowing you to gain a University degree without worrying about student loans. I would recommend this program to a friend as I believe it is a great way for someone to develop their skills and build a career. The program allows the cadet to develop a wide range of skills as well allowing them to network and gain valuable contacts within the business and construction industry.
I would advise anyone applying to the program to research what role they would like to apply for and ask someone currently in that role to tell them about their job. This way they can get an idea of what they would be taking on and decide if it is for them.
