My role on a day to day basis this first year has been to learn about the principles of engineering at QinetiQs apprenticeship school. It has also been to keep coursework up to date.
I have learnt many new skills so far. For Example I have learnt how to design, set up and solder an electrical circuit. I have also learnt the basics of electrical CAD software.
I have learned a lot in a short time during my apprenticeship so I have been thoroughly enjoying my experience.
I feel very valued by DSTL which is shown by the continued support to learn more. I have had numerous safety training courses whilst here, the latest one being gas training.
The program is well organised. I know what it is I am going to be doing on a day to day basis. I have a time table detailing what is happening for the week. On a long time scale each part of my apprenticeship is prepared well in advance I.E upcoming job placements.
I receive a lot of support from my training supervisor. I have a 3 monthly revision of my progress as well as revising my target grades for any upcoming exams. I also have multiple sources of information at my disposal for any information that I might need.
My employer offers just as much support for my learning as my trainer does.
My salary meets my costs well and I will receive a pay rise after the fist year is over.
There are social gatherings that are available to me outside of work with both DSTL and QinetiQ. This involves activities like go karting and paintballing.
