Im a degree apprentice and my job title is a software engineer, on a day to day basis we have a morning meeting i get set tasks to complete in a certain space of time. These tasks deadlines can range anywhere from a few hours to a week to complete, depending on difficulty. As Capgemini is a big company I'm working on currently working on projects for big customers i could never have imagined working with when i first left school.
I don't know where to start with this, even though i have only been with the company for a short period of time I've learnt so much and come such a long way from when i first joined. When i first joined i had no previous experience with coding, but i have learnt so much in a very short space of time.
What i enjoy most about my programme is everyday is a challenge as there hasn't been one day so far where i haven't learnt something new. Another thing about the programme is the way everyone you work with is always willing to give you a helping hand if you are struggling with a particular subject.
I've worked for a lot of IT companies before rangeing from small startups threw to large worldwide groups. Even though i am at the start of my career and the bottom of the pay scale, the value and respect i receive each day compares to no other company i have ever worked for. There are no egos here and everyone talks on level terms no matter what your job title is. After working for other companies and experiencing the complete opposite, this is just one thing i love about working here.
As this programme that i am on is quite new, it has replaced a simliar old style of degree that has been running for years. Because this has been done for years there is already a well structured approach to it which works. For example when you first start in the induction week your programme is clearly broken down for you. After you complete your first 10 weeks of training you are buddied up with someone who has done the programme before. There are so many support opportunities within the programme all you have to do is ask.
The degree which i do takes place at Aston University, as the programme has took place there for many years before i joined there is already a well structured approach to support. Aston are aware of the kind of students we are and they always support us as best they physically can. The Facilitates and material we also have access to to help us is also exceptional.
As i mentioned before within Capgemini there are so many people you can speak to and ask for help. If you need help with something such as you are struggling with the work load there is also a programme manager which you can go to at any point to talk to and help you get around it.
When i was looking around for a sponsored degree, Capgemini was the market leader for starting salary and benefits. To be honest the salary and benefits are really good when you take in the fact that you are getting paid to complete a degree and learn while still doing a job.
When i first joined the company they really went out of their way to make sure i felt accepted and appreciated at the company. Arranging team nights out and events everyday for the first week i was there.I haven't been with Capgemini very long but i am aware that there are loads of different activities/ nights out you can take part in with your fellow coworkers if you really want to.
Yes
As i mentioned before the company values, culture and support compare to no other company i have worked for. As the company is so big and in so many different countries, the possibilities are really endless for where ever you want to go within the IT industry. Unlike other companies if your passion is really in another section of IT they will support you and give you the tools to move over there.
If you are looking for interview tips, be smart and organised, look smart, read up on the companies core values and show that you have real enthusiasm and the desire/lust to learn for the particular programme you want to go for, as this is the type of person they are looking for. If you are the type of person that quits easy and doesn't like to be challenged, form my experience i'd say the programme isn't for you. Although it is hard, you have plenty of support from the university, Capgemini and your coworkers so it is well worth it in the end.
