I joined EY as part of the 2014 School Leaver intake as a trainee tax advisor in EY's Indirect Tax Team. My daily role revolves around handing a variety of tax compliance & advisory engagements - completing returns, liaising with the team/clients, producing presentations, writing reports, completing technical research and also working on my professional development. In my fist two years, I have steadily been building my tax technical knowledge, taking on more responsibility within the team and also building a professional network.
Qualifications: I am currently studying for my ACA qualification as part of the programme (I have completed the CFAB level of the ACA) Internal Training: During my first two years with EY, I have attended a number of tax training courses as well as professional development meetings / discussions with my team. Professional Skills: Due to the extensive exposure to client work / projects - I feel I have developed a whole host of skills such as technical knowledge, confidence, IT based skills, business awareness and application knowledge such as report writing / interpretation of legislation.
On the whole, I have really enjoyed being part of the programme. Principally, this has been because of the structured nature of the work/qualifications and the friendly environment which I'm part of day-to-day.
The regular review meetings and feedback process makes me feel a valued part of the team at EY. The receipt of impact awards / commendations allows you to take pride in your work. Moreover, I really value the time senior staff take to consider my development and actively promote my involvement in projects / work.
The 5 year School Leaver Programme at EY is well structured, both in terms of the on-going ACA training and the support provided within the business. From my personal experience, I went through a very comprehensive induction programme and was very pleased to be assigned a very supportive buddy and counsellor. With regards to my role within Indirect Tax, I feel very encouraged at the keen interest taken in my professional development by the wider team.
The training provider provides a good level of support as part of my studies on the programme. The tutors are knowledgeable and, whilst the courses can be intense, they are very well structured. The learning material provided is always to a very high standard and learning as part of a peer group makes the experience much more manageable.
The support from my team has been fantastic from the very start of my time at EY. This is both because of the culture at the firm and also the support which is in place. All joiners have a 'buddy' who is an assigned contact for any questions / general support in settling into the business. In addition to this - EY's counsellor system offers on-going guidance for all members of staff - with detailed reviews taking place every six months on progress.
As in all cases, living, working and travelling in/around London can result in significant costs. I feel that the salary offered by EY is competitive and covers my expenses / lifestyle.
There are a lot of organised social events and committees at EY. These range from sporting societies to faith based groups. In addition to this, EY supports charitable and corporate responsibility activities. Personally, I've been involved with some of the recruitment / business development opportunities available outside of my day-to-day role within the team.
Yes
I feel that the programme has offered me a viable and exciting alternative to University. Moreover, the positive environment at EY and the support provided makes it a great place for those embarking on their career.
I would definitely recommend researching the field of professional services and take the time to review EY's career / service line information. If possible, it's also a great idea to attend any EY career events / information events as it's a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the programme and ask any questions you may have.
