While i worked in the office i was given tasks to complete from several employees such as managers and other trainees. This involved preparing draft documents and using excel to complete some work. I also had the opportunity to work with teams at client sites which was a great insight into what is required as a school leaver.
I have developed several skills such as using the internal software at BDO and using my Excel skills to solve problems with data. Working alongside the trainees also allowed me to develop my professional communications and networking skills. The application process made me more confident in a interview or presentation situations.
The induction in London exceeded my expectations and was really enjoyable. It was organised in the Baker Street office and the activities were really enjoyable. I really enjoyed being given responsibility throughout the two weeks and being able to work at a client's site as this allowed me to learn the company culture and understand the requirements of this career.
During the short period of two weeks i was given a lot of responsibility and my buddy helped to organise days where i could work at client's site. As well as this, i had the opportunity to meet a range of employees from a partner to a school leaver.
I always had some work to complete as i was given tasks from employees within the audit department. However they always came across and clearly explained what i needed to do and the trainees i worked alongside were very supportive and taught me how to prepare and complete different documents.
Employees always took time out to teach me how to complete tasks and you have a buddy assigned to you in the week who you can ask if you need any help therefore you are never in the situation where you don't know what to do.
You have a buddy assigned to you and also a manager to supervise your two weeks in work experience. The HR Team regularly contact you through email and update you on what to do throughout the programme.
I felt the pay was quite good for work experience and all travel expenses such as to the induction in London or to a client's site were reimbursed which is quite a bonus.
In my first few days i was taken out to a meal which was a great opportunity to network. I was also invited to a social event after work which was really enjoyable and i learnt that the company promotes and supports charity work, volunteering etc.
Yes
After completing the programme you have the opportunity to be offered a place on their school leaver programme (subject to a final interview). This would lead you to become a chartered accountant with the ICAEW's ACA qualification which is recognised internationally. As well as this you get a real insight into what being an accountant and looks great on your CV.
Ensure you practise a few numerical/verbal tests before hand as these are quite different to any content studied in school. When going to the interview, make sure you have prepared a list of scenarios which you can relate to when asked competency questions. Practise interview questions and your presentation for the interview with a teacher/parent/friend. Research the firm, what they do, their core values, and the school leaver programme they offer.
