My role was as a work experience student, I am currently on my first year of college. The first thing I would do at the start of the day is to receive a presentation by trainee solicitors, then we would join which ever departments we are working in. These departments range from property, pensions and litigation. Towards the end of the day, I twice found my self with no work as I had completed it all and received no new work from the solicitor.
Pinsent Masons has given me more confidence in my self and with my presentation skills. Tracking to Pinsent Masons also involved me getting a train by my self, as silly as it sounds I felt a sense of independence and also a sense a pride as I was trusted with actual work.
I enjoyed my programme throughly, it gave me a real insight to the work of a commercial law firm and sectors within these. It also allowed me to meet different levels of authority in the firm such as partners and associatives, this gave me a perspective from many different points of views.
I did feel fairly valued, however sometimes a felt like an annoyance as the lawyers were very busy and I didn't feel like a could ask for work as I would just be adding on to their work load.
The programme is very organised and I had a time table for every single day, this told my what department I was with, who I would be with and what I would be doing.
The training provider was very supportive and even provided a Facebook group chat so I could interact with other individuals who are on the work experience scheme.
Sometimes the lawyers were not in the same building as they had to go see clients etc. Also the lawyers also had massive work loads so had to spend their time wisely.
I did not receive a salary or package, however I did receive a £5 voucher for use at the deli (cafeteria).
No, I was not Informed about any opportunities outside the office. However, the trainee solicitors did tell us that they regularly went on socials with other solicitors.
Yes
The whole experience does give a great insight into the daily life's of lawyers and has further educated my decision to pursue law as a career.
Act confident in everything that you do and ask your supervisor if you are unsure about the work set, ask questions.
