I currently Test, Inspect, and Repair lifting equipment. This includes disassembling chainblocks (for inspection), if any components are damaged or worn we will change them and re-assemble the chainblock. Finally we will carry out a Light Load Test to ensure it is working correctly and update the Inspection date on it.
I have developed my observation and mechanical skills. I now know what to look for when inspecting a piece of lifting equipment and how to repair it if needed.
I am really enjoying my apprenticeship so far, I have learnt a lot of new skills and developed confidence in my work. I hope to carry on learning to achieve a status of a company 'Competent Person'. My apprenticeship has helped me meet lots of new people who I stay in contact with out of work.
I feel like a valued member of the team, my Team Leader has noticed and praised my work numerous times, this helps in keeping motivated day to day. As an apprentice I am trusted to carry out tasks myself under supervision.
Our programme seemed well organized, we were given the correct training in college which helped us prepare for the workplace. College tutors were always there to offer help if you didn't understand something.
My apprentice coordinator helps me keep track with what I need to do to complete the course. I have completed various write-ups and carried out a few observations which were marked by my coordinator. They always seem happy to help if you need anything.
Support from various different people is there if needed. There is always someone to go to depending on what problems you may have.
My salary is very good for someone my age, I can enjoy the things I want to without having to worry too much about money.
A few companies around the area offer discounts for BAE employees, this includes a few gyms. BAE Systems also offer a 'Cycle to Work' scheme which gives you a discount of brand new bikes.
