  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Analyst programmer, Daily tasks include a daily "agile stand up" meeting in the morning talking about what we did the day before and what we're going to do today. Then talk to my manager to see what my tasks for the day are. Lunch with other SDP students etc. External contacts would be my mentor. My only responsibilities are to complete my work in a timely manner and to attend all of my meeting while representing and upholding all of CGI rules. I have my own role within my project where I created automated scripts for things like testing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • CGI sponsored us through a Agile training course. The university side has vastly improved my programming skills. Project wise, I now understand how the workplace functions and my knowledge of the automated test script writing program 'Selenium' have greatly improved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my work life, it's relatively relaxed and I always receive help when needed. My work is also recognised and is used to an effective level. Now I've settled, my expectations are pretty satisfied as I felt more nerves coming in that actual expectations. Overall I do enjoy it but the balance between work and university is quite stressful, but I manage with support.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by CGI?
  • Project wise I am very content. I do not feel undervalued at all, everyone is busy and has their own stuff to do and I have mine. Not only this but I find myself being taught something new or asked to complete new work every few days so, I am confident people on my project feel I am able to complete new tasks to the level they need. With regards to my script writing, the person I'm working with is quite happy as he has never had time to do these automations and now I'm here, most of the things he'd wanted to do for some time have no been done and I don't feel like I have lacked any praise or thanks for doing it.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The whole getting started process was quite long but needed. I settled into my project in a very busy time but after a little while it settled down and I was quite happy with that. University side, I'd like to have more advice about how work should be completed and the vast amount there is to do. Our mentors are a big help but just as our deadline were coming up, he went on leave for 2 months and I feel it like it could have been handled better

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support has been pretty good. I get what I need when I ask for it but, again it has to be asked for. Both university and work are very happy to help with support and this makes things easier

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Work wise I get an awful lot when it's needed or I ask for it. Training courses have already been provided and with my work, all I have to do is drop a message to a member on my team and they will find the time to help me.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I chose to stay and home instead of relocating but it's very expensive and I live near to my base office. Even so, my travel costs are very high (350 miles a week including University) but, other than that I was able to use my left over money to manage a social life and other things so overall pretty good.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I often get emails about events being held etc. Not many appeal to me but I'm sure they do to some. One event coming up might see me and a few other SDP students partaking in an endurance weekend which is something I didn't expect from this company but still seems good.

  • 9. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a solid company. My SDP is tough and will remain to be tough for the next 3 years but I'd day it's do able as most SDP would agree. Most 18-19 year olds will have not experienced a full time job pay so it is very nice.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • It's all in the assessment day so, study up on the company, suit up and be as confident as you can. Don't attempt to make other look bad, simply acknowledge everyone around you, include everyone and make sure the assessors see YOU as being a good TEAM player.
