  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Assistant Tax Advisor in Reading office I am involved with a number of our clients on a daily basis, completing tasks ranging from basic compliance (including tax returns and general compliance with international tax laws) to advice provided on specific areas of my service line. One of my biggest projects is a compliance project dealing with thousands of returns every year where I coordinate the entire project, updating the client and our teams on a daily basis. Aside from this I also have direct contact with our clients, helping to ensure we build and maintain strong relationships.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • We are provided with regular internal training within our own service lines. To date I have been to five separate training sessions away from the office (including four weekly courses and one three-day course) and many internal update sessions within the office. Alongside this I am studying towards professional qualifications which keeps me up-to-date with all current issues in my service line, as well as many others. You get to show and develop your skills and strengths on a daily basis. Confidence is key when speaking to senior staff and most importantly, your clients. I feel this is something I have developed since starting at EY. We are all given the opportunity to build on on our strengths and learn on a daily basis.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I expected to come into the office, make the teas and ensure the filing was all up to date. Completely the opposite! I was involved with clients from my first day, taken into calls, meetings. The general feeling at EY is that everyone contributes, no matter what level you are at. The school leavers bring a fresh approach and an energy which is transmitted across the teams we are in and the office as a whole.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • We are given regular feedback on work and projects we complete which aids development and really gives you a feeling of recognition and value. When completing a piece of work, senior staff are very quick to say thank you and it is clear there is a tremendous sense of gratitude.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Before starting at EY, the organisation was brilliant. Considering that this was the first year the school leaver programme was officially run, I was very surprised at how efficient and informative everything has been. From the three day induction with all the new school leavers to regular career meetings with your dedicated counsellor, everything is organised and structured in a way that helps you develop as an individual.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We are given as much help as we need for our study time from our external tuition provider. The tutors are quick to give us their contact details to answer any questions following completion of the course and in the build-up to the exams.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We are able to meet with our assigned buddy or careers counsellor as often as we like to discuss any issues that may have arisen. The support received from senior members or staff in general is great.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I am more than comfortable on the salary, I have a great room in a modern house, eat well, have a new car and still have plenty left over to save and socialise with. Of course everyone would like more, but you are rewarded if you put in the work in the long-run.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are regular events arranged internally with the office as a whole as well as social events organised by the graduates and school leavers most weeks. EY has a successful CSR programme which I have not yet had a chance to participate in but look forward to doing so. The office has many sports teams which are easy to get involved with too including football, rugby and cricket. The location of the office is great. There is a footbridge directly from the train station into the office and it is right in the centre of town with great transport links.

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The overall experience is great and one I would encourage everyone to apply if they are interested in the sector.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • There is plenty of advice freely available on our website from people like me giving their honest opinions of the whole recruitment process. I would say be yourself, be confident but not arrogant. When in the business try and build your personal brand and establish yourself as an individual. Ask plenty of questions and get involved with as many projects as you can.
