I work in the Transaction Tax team which involves advising clients on the potential tax exposure on transactions (such as acquisitions, disposals, and mergers). My day-to-day tasks are extremely varied as I work on a variety of projects with different clients and project teams. However as a junior, I tend to draft emails, tax technical notes and even reports.
I am currently studying towards the ACA which is a globally recognised professional qualification. EY also have internal training schemes for software, and for tax tachnicalities. Ontop of this, I have gained a variety of skills on the job, such as communication, organisation and social.
I am over the moon with the career path that I have chosen. EY as a firm has an outstanding people culture and I really feel supported on the school leaver programme. The programme has substantially exceeded my expectations.
I definitely feel appreciation by managers and above when I produce work for them. My managers try and get involved in as many interesting projects as they can and so I am also appreciative of them. There have been many times when I have put forward my thoughts on a project and given my input.
The programme's duration is 5 years and we qualify as chartered accountants after this time. We work and study at the same time on the programme.
We are given our tutor's email if we have any queries on our course materials and we can contact them anytime. We are also given access to an online platform where we can access futher materials and mock tests, this is extremely helpful.
My team are very supportive of my exams and always offer to help if I am stuck on any areas of the material. They are also understanding if you choose to take some holiday just before your exam date in order to revise. Each new joiner is aligned with a counsellor, a mentor and a buddy. This support network is fantastic.
I currently live at home and so do not have as many outgoings as I would if I was renting. At the moment I have a substantial amount of disposable income, however this would not be the case if I were to rent. Buying lunch in central London can be quite expensive and so I would suggest bringing your own lunch from home. Travel tickets can also be costly, and for this reason I have bought a yearly ticket.
There are always opportunities to help out at career events and charity events on behalf of EY. This is a great way to network and meet new people.
Yes
The people culture here is extremely strong. Everyone I have come across is friendly and helpful. The support network is outstanding and I am very comfortable in my role.
Research the interview process and spend atleast a day in preparation for your interview and assessment day. With regards to the online tests, there are plenty of practice online tests available on the internet.
