At the moment in time, I am based at a local college studying a Level 3 Diploma in Mechatronics. Over the 5 days i'm at college, I study 12 units with a mixture of mechanical and electrical units of which I there is a variety of assignments to complete.
After coming from an similar engineering course, I thought this year of the apprenticeship would have been a repeat of what i had already completed. My opinion has changed as the previous education has aided me to become more knowledgeable in newer fields and expanding the knowledge of previous ones.
I really like my course and feel happy about going to work everyday. The only downside would be that there a bit too much theory work compared with practical work, but the second year of the course will allows us to learn them skills.
I feel valued by Siemens as any progress is recognised by our manager who is very happy to pass the messages of praise to us, I feel this keeps me motivated and to enjoy my job. The bonus' and pay rise reflect the value to me as an employee.
Our program is structure well with a plan for the rest of the 4 years. In the start we were due to be college based for one year but we have recently informed it has been extended to two years, this will allows us to complete out PEO units at college. This years college work is all managed well with achievable timescales allowing us to complete all work to the best standard.
There is a good amount of support from the college, all lectures I am taught by have a background in Engineering so are very passionate and knowledgeable in what they teach. If you are not understanding a certain part of a unit, the staff will support you in the best way possible to ensure you are not falling behind.
The support from our employer is always available if need be. We also have 1 to 1 reviews every 2 weeks to talk over our progress, expectations and any problems we may have, between these 2 weeks we are kept up to date through emails and phone calls from our line manager.
We are on a salary of about £10,600 and in my case my salary covers all my monthly costs and enough disposable income for my needs. After only being at the company 4 months, I have received Christmas bonus followed by a pay rise in January, this is great for the short amount of time I have been employed here.
There is none available as of yet due to us apprentices being based at college. Instead there is outside sports clubs/teams available by our college for anyone who is interested.
Yes
I feel the company is second to none in regards to training, they invest a lot of money in you as an apprentice and make you feel like they want you to succeed. The pay and benefits are great.
Make sure your cover letter and CV is a full representation of you. In the interview stage don't pretend to be somebody your not and just be yourself. There are lots of applicants for this apprenticeship so make sure you stand out as much as possible.
