  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • BIM Engineer - my role is to assist the BIM Implementation engineer with his task of integrating BIM into our project. I have responsibilities of creating drawings that the wider construction team would use out on site to enable them to do their job more effectively.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have continued to develop my skills as I have been allowed to undertake several different training courses for software that allows me to do my part on the project. During my time in the industry, I have learned how to use several different software that has allowed me to get some of the responsibilities in the workplace that I have now.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do really enjoy my programme as I am able to keep progressing my skills and the company generally support you with whatever you require. I also enjoy the company of the team at Costain as they are all really friendly and helpful.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Costain?
  • I do feel very valued as I find that a lot of the time I do get acknowledged for the work I have done in the time frame given. I get plenty of appreciation shown from my managers for my progress made since joining Costain.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Yes, the programme is very well structured. Costain always offer support and training opportunities also allowing for opportunities to study alongside you work life. So far I am on track to completed my project and personal objectives.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Wherever I am unsure, my training provider provides me with the information I need. They are always keen to resolve any issues that you may have and within a reasonable time scale.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. They provide support in every aspect of being part of the scheme. They ensure that you know what you want to achieve and help you get to that goal.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Honestly, I would say that a higher salary would be better as the cost of living is increasing faster that my pay. This can sometimes be a struggle, however manageable and generally, the employer are always able to support you.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are always opportunities outside of work. I myself have not been involved with a lot of them. Some very social activities are great with colleagues as they allow to develop the relationship between you and your colleagues making you a better team.

  • 9. Would you recommend Costain to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because they are a enjoyable and reliable company to work for. They allow you to develop your skills in whatever aspect you are interested in the construction industry. They also allow you to study as well as work which is always a positive as not every employer allows this.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • My route into Costain was by being recruited through a college,, however they always have jobs available all over the UK in several different sectors. You just have to show a genuine interest in the industry and what you may be able to bring to the table.
