I mainly work on internal audit engagements whereby I am responsible for producing the work papers and potentially conducting meetings. I am also responsible for conducting testing and following up on exceptions and queries.
I have definitely improved my communication skills, both written and spoken. I am now a lot more comfortable leading meetings and meeting new people whether that be in the office or on client site. I have also broadened my understanding on internal audits which started as almost non-existent but now I understand the overall process and can adapt it to different clients
When I am assigned to projects I greatly enjoy the programme and think it has been a great way to learn whilst doing. However I do think this is largely down to luck as many other new joiners have been unassigned for a lengthy period of time and when they are it can be work for different departments.
I have always received appreciation from my managers for my work and given tips and help during projects to help improve my work. My suggestions are always taken on board and discussed with me and where not practical they have shown me how without feeling patronised.
The induction process was messy which was to a degree understandable seeing as it is a fairly new programme however it did make starting more stressful and daunting. The training was useful and enjoyable for the areas that related to the work I would be doing however there was more training given for the areas I don't get involved in. This meant that it was difficult to understand when information was useful to me and when it wasn't, it was also not engaging or enjoyable.
The facilitators for our training were useful and helpful however as mentioned above the training wasn't always relatable. Once in the office there is a good network of people to ask for help. We have buddies and appraisers which are there to help us with any questions we have and managers are happy to help us learn whilst on projects.
There are many people available to us for different areas of the business (see above). The only difficulty was when you didn't know who exactly to ask for help. For example I had an HR query but had to ask a few people before finding the name of the exact person to contact.
My salary does not cover my cost of living but this is due to me moving to London and paying high rent. As I receive financial support on rent from parents, my salary is able to cover all other expenses. Working on client site, e.g. hotels and travel, are all reimbursed by the company so there is no strain on my own finances.
There are a wide variety or different opportunities outside of work varying from sports clubs, socials, project meals, volunteer work etc. I joined a sports club and there are events on nearly every 2 weeks with competitions and meals in-between that.
Yes
I think it has provided me with a great opportunity in life both professionally and in my everyday life. I have moved away from home so am much more independent and I have also met many new people. It is also a great starting point for my career to start in such a large firm, especially without a degree.
To be yourself throughout the application process. One of the big differences about the firm is that it is a lot more personable. All of the staff are friendly, down to earth people who are willing to work hard and learn so its better to show your capability and willingness to try than to show off what qualifications you have.
