My role is Assistant Relationship Manager within Commercial Banking- Technology & Media sector. My role is to build strong relationships with clients by providing excellent service when looking after accounts or providing advise. This includes, account openings, closures, mandate changes, authorising payments, setting up tasks etc. Also attend face to face meetings with clients. In addition I study towards my PBC exam as part of my apprenticeship.
I am currently working towards PBC qualification which includes organisational skills to juggle study and work. I am able to effectively communicate with customers and team as well as providing the best possible service/handle complaints/solve customer experience. As part of working for the bank I have to regularly complete regular reading around conduct rules, regulation, safety etc.
I very much enjoy this programme and feel I have got a lot more out of it than I originally thought I would. It has taught me independence and responsibility. I am trusted to make important decisions with regards to the bank/customers and this makes me even more eager to work within the bank and get promoted.
I feel extremely valued by RBS. They pay particular attention to their apprentices and are eager for them to succeed. If I ever need support/help, the bank and my team are ALWAYS willing to assist. They have been extremely welcoming and I believe my salary reflects our responsibility and value.
At first I was a little confused with the apprenticeship programme as there were so many parts/online login/textbooks etc. However, I got help from fellow apprentices and My BPP who explained each part. This allowed me to organise my notes/decide when I am going to study throughout the week etc. The only thing I would say is that 4 months is a very short time to study the amount we have to which is why I have to plan wisely and do a lot at home.
I have received support from the provider in explaining the apprenticeship. However, I don't believe its very clear who to contact if I have queries with technical support/a question on the study/general questions etc. I feel we've been given many email addresses and it sometimes feels like you're being referred to someone else. However, the tutors are excellent and ALWAYS answer any questions in the seminar!
As mentioned before, RBS are EXTREMELY helpful and invest a lot of time into apprenticeships. Whenever I feel like I have a lot of work on, I am welcome to go elsewhere and study- to them. study ALWAYS comes first! If I have a question, my team are so supportive and always help me.
I believe salary is extremely good for an apprentice compared to other organisations. However, I do believe it reflects the amount of work I have and the amount of effort I put into my study. Often I come in early and stay late at work, and study in the evenings and weekends. Obviously I spend a lot of travel because I do not live close however, its worth it for my position.
RBS are very supportive in charity/community work and allow a certain time off a year to attend charity/community/voluntary work. I think this is a great idea which every company should do! There are many event within my team (tech and media) such as tech events at excel which are really fun!
Yes
RBS offer amazing opportunities/support for young people like me- there eager to help us succeed and patient with us learning. Their apprenticeship course I believe is the best one out there as you get thrown in the deep end from the very beginning meaning you can get stuck in and learn a lot! As well, they promise you a job at the end of the course!
I would say, 'be yourself!'. I did many other interviews before this one and it was definitely forced. I didn't believe I have a chance getting a position here so in the interview I just relaxed and was myself, even had a joke with the interviewer (who is now my boss!). This allowed me to gather thought more quickly and answer questions better than I ever had. Before applying I recommend doing as much work experience as possible! In every interview I've been to they've been hot on work experience so I don't believe I would be where I am without the amount I did- it also gives you transferable skills and makes you generally a better person! It also lets you see what you could see yourself doing in the future. Finally, prepare, prepare, prepare! Before applying and the interview, know the RBS website/values etc off the back of your hand. They wont employ you if you're not interested in the values/purpose of the bank- be confident!
