  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role consists of assisting my aligned manager in serving customers and helping them with their everyday banking needs, as well as helping the manager with more admin based things such as booking meetings and creating agendas and meeting briefs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills since working within the bank and since starting the apprenticeship programme. I have learned how to be more professional in my role and my work and in the way I communicate with customers and other colleagues within the bank. I am still learning all of the processes and skills I need.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy the programme as it makes me think in a different way than what I would normally do. It challenges me to think of scenarios and examples of where I have completed certain things. It has also encouraged me to do a lot of research into the internal processes and policies within my organisation that I wouldn't normally have looked at.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • I feel very valued by RBS. They provide a good benefit package offering different insurance and policies and a reduced price which is excellent and something that I wouldn't normally consider. They always offer help and guidance for whatever situation someone may be in and someone will always offer their help and support should you need it.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised and structured and I know exactly what I need to be doing and when. They provide you with an introduction kit right at the start of the programme with links and information on how the programme will work and who to contact should you have any questions. One of the resources provided is a timetable of exactly when everything will happen, such as all the online classes and when all of the workbooks are due in.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have always received support where I need it from the training provider. If I ever have any questions regarding any of the taskbooks I am completing, I can contact my assessor and she will help me by giving me guidance on how to get the answer myself rather than directly telling me the answer. I also received guidance when booking my exam and RBSAPP chased the exam centre to confirm my booking as they hadn't come back to me in over a week. I get the impression that they are always willing and happy to help you.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have never really asked for too much support from my employer as I know they are all busy but when I have asked they have been very supportive and helpful. My line manager was particularly helpful on one occasion when he sat with me for over an hour helping me with my employee rights and responsibilities workbook. He gave me guidance and support on where to find the information that was required.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary covers my living costs. It covers my rent and all of the bills that I have to pay such as gas, electric, phone and water. It also covers my monthly car finance payments and petrol to run the car as well. I also can socialise with my friends within my salary and buy things such as new clothes and do my food shopping as well.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are loads of opportunities, such as charity days and company activities. Recently our office took part in a local charity day which encouraged us to raise as much money and awareness for the charity within the local community as possible. We were split into teams and the aim was to see who could raise the most.

  • 9. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • RBS is a very good company to work for and I would highly recommend the apprenticeship programme. It is an excellent way to begin a career within the financial services industry. It has given me skills that I never ordinarily would have received and it has developed on skills I already had. There are so many different parts within the organisation and the team that I work within are always happy to support if you are looking into careers in other areas.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • The advice that I would give others applying to RBS is to really prepare yourself for the interview process, both the face to face interview and the telephone interview. There are topics that are to be covered off in the telephone interview that it is vitally important that you prepare for, and prepare extensive and detailed answers so that you can be as prepared as you can be for any questions they may ask you. I would also advise to do some research into the company history as well.
