  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm currently an Assistant Quantity Surveyor working on the New build construction of 7 Schools in Yorkshire. I split my week between the regional office and on site. Daily I interact with various sub-contractors and supply chain representatives as well as engineers, planners and various other roles. My main tasks are to manage the costs, progress and productivity of the project, analyzing potential risks or opportunities and exploiting them for commercial gain.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the programme I've had exposure to internal training courses and developmental modules which have enabled me to gain a wide range of new skills in areas like CAD, Commercial Training and Health and safety. There are a wide range of courses available to LOR staff and full support is given to partake in these courses.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme. I've been exposed to a lot during my 2 years and I couldn't recommend the programme enough, however take a strong view that you get out what you put in and you need to chase opportunities as nothing is 'given to you on a plate'.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • To start with i felt very valued by LOR. However as your responsibilities increase i do not believe that they are rewarded as much as they should be. Especially when comparing your salary to the industry average. This for me is the biggest problem with the programme. Although, I would advise to try work through this downfall as the content and experience you get with the programme and the experience at university definitely out weigh this issue.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. The support is always there if you need it. There are lots of training and development opportunities and various systems in place to make sure you know where you stand within the programme in relation to modules and other progression events.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Personally, i don't rate my University well at al. However this is totally dependent on where you go. I would advise to choose your university based on ratings and reviews over location - This has nothing to do and does not reflect LOR.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive huge support from my line manager, on work and personal issues. I partake in one to one coaching with an outstanding 'early talent programme advisor', who has really guided and improved my attitude and progression within the work environment.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • LOR offer a generous mobility allowance if you are required to work away, however i do think that the salary should mirror the industry average at least - This definitely causes de-motivation. All business travel is paid for or reimbursed.

    6/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • This depends on the team you work with. LOR offer a brilliant All Expenses paid Christmas party in London, depending on Company success.

  • 9. Would you recommend Laing O'Rourke to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Brilliant Opportunity to gain work experience along with a sponsored degree. What makes LOR's Degree Programme the best in the industry is its brilliant developmental modules tailored to every step in your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • Research your potential role before the interview. Ask lots of questions. Be true to yourself - don't use cliché interview answers, they want people who can think for themselves.
