Trainee Quantity Surveyor Review

I am a trainee Quantity Surveyor, as a QS my daily tasks include the following, looking at contracts, determining whether there has been a change to a contract, then if I deem that there is a change, I will then value the change in order to keep an eye on any changes in cost that the company are likely to expect. This is commonly referred to as valuing variations. I tend to interact with other Quantity Surveyors and Project Engineers. Responsibility varies, but at my level there is a limited amount but still with lots of support.

I have learned a lot about excel, just by doing my day job or various tasks. I can now use excel to give me more information and display more information which is helpful in my job. There have been various courses from within LOR mostly relating to my role.

I now enjoy working life. The teams that you work with are very supportive right from the off. You are encouraged to discuss problems or ideas within the team which helps you bond. The programme exceeded my expectations and offers more support and advice than I had expected. It also gives you the freedom to try to find a better way to do things, people don't tell you that there is only one way/process to do things.

I have been on projects since I started with LOR, therefore I think that I might not yet have fully experienced what it is like to work for them. However within the project team everyone feels valued.

There is periodic training sessions set up by the programme team. We had an induction which ran over a few days and gave us all of the information that we needed to start our working life. There is constant support available if required.

Travel expenses are contributed towards, therefore I do not feel like I incur costs from traveling to work. I am now closer to home on this project which helps. However my salary more than covers my costs

There are social events with the project team from time to time. There are also occasional company events alongside the SCL Programme.

The application process, at least when I applied, consisted of a telephone interview, then an aptitude test, then the final assessment day with 5 other applicants. There is a group discussion around given material (I would have liked to have been told to do more reading around the company and industry to give me more insight before the application day) which is monitored and assessed. Then there is a personal statement type of document that you have prepared before the day that you will sit in front of a manager and present and discuss. then there is a discussion about your CV and related documents with another manager along with discussion of situations where you faced hardship and how you overcame them and things you would have done differently etc.
