I am a project management higher apprentice, I spend most of my time compiling reporting packs and other reports as well as chasing people for information. I often email people within the business who are at a higher level than me to gather vital project information from them. I have organised and led an apprentice Open Evening to advertise the scheme.
I have had internal training on subject matters such as risk and change. I have developed my skills immensely with regard to my communication skills and further more my literacy skills. I can also deal with any conflict which may arise from email communication.
The work can at times be tedious but at others it can be extremely fulfilling when things go to plan. The people I work with are very social which allows me to feel comfortable at work. The company put a lot of effort into the apprentices within the business and this enhances the experience that we receive as we feel far more valued. It has thus far exceeded my expectations and I am thoroughly enjoying the experience every day.
My direct line manager probably does not appreciate me that much by the people above her i.e. the early careers manager make me feel very important and that my role has a value. I have received a star award for my efforts towards the Open Evening and it was nice to receive this recognition.
I had to start a month later than planned due to an admin error which effected my security clearance. I have received a reasonable amount of training however it would be nice to receive more. It can be difficult to manage time when it comes to placement work and degree work as either side are often very busy. The programme as a whole is well organised considering it has only been running for the past 3 years.
I do not receive too much in terms of training but when I do it is usually well delivered and backed up with further reading to ensure I back up my knowledge with this.
I don't receive enough support from my manager but that is my placement specific as I do work for a number of people rather than just one manager. The HR team are brilliant with apprentices and provide all the support you could want. If you require a mentor they are easy to get in contact with.
My salary efficiently meets the cost of living. The one problem is that my base site is 50 miles from where I live so I spend a large amount of money each month on petrol which I think could be covered.
There are several extra things that you can take on as an apprentice at BAE, I have taken part in the APM Challenge as well as the Apprentice Innovation Challenge. I am now also STEM ambassador which allows me to then go into schools and educate others which is sufficiently rewarding.
Yes
It is an excellent company to work for that will definitely make any apprentice feel valued and important as well as providing an incredible stepping stone into the professional world that so few are lucky enough to have.
The key at interview is to know what the business do but on top of that confidence is key, without confidence you will struggle to make the best impression you can.
