I am a second year apprentice currently in the development sector of Applied Intelligence. Every day I join a stand up call where the developers and testers state yesterday’s activities and today’s plans. I interact with the client on these calls to ensure that what we are doing is correct and what they expect from us. Throughout the day I interact with the testers and other developers. I have a responsibility to look after a less experienced developer who is also on the project.
I have learnt a lot of programming skills and enhanced those previously gained. I have not been on any training for the development tasks I am currently undertaking, however, I am planning on taking part in some upcoming training courses. I have improved my personal skills through apprentice activities such as presentations and leading groups in activities
I am really enjoying my programme. My work colleagues and team members are very good and I am learning a lot from them through peer programming and shadowing. The course so far has met my expectations as I have rotated around departments and found one which I really enjoy.
I fell very appreciated by my line manager as he ensures that I get recognition within the team and I get on projects which will help me progress. I do not believe that there is the opportunity to get external recognition, however, I do put myself forward to attend in careers events which take place to gain more recognition. In regards to internal recognition, I have been speaking to a larger range of people in different sections to promote myself further.
The induction of the programme was good as it allowed all the training to take place and then introductions to be made. The college which we attend to gain the degree is poor and needs improvement. The support from the training manager is ok as they are able to support us where needed. The structure of the programme needs work as rotations are supposed to take place and while they did for myself, others are not getting the same opportunities through resources and available space.
In regards to college, they are very poor and are in desperate need of help. The tutors are average to poor and the support provided by them is minimal. We did raise concerns, however, these weren't all combatted. Work is not returned within the designated timescale and no effort is made to improve this.
I receive a lot of support from my line manager, they ensure that my needs are met and I am supported where needed. I have taken it upon myself to gain networks with other colleagues who I believe may help my career progress, however, this was not through help from anyone other than my line manager who I am very grateful to have.
I commute to work every day which is around a 30-45 minute drive. My salary meets my fuel costs and covers this happily. I then get the train into Leeds center for college and this is covered by my salary as well
I attend apprentice career events to help promote BAE AI which help gain recognition from those in the office. We also do charity events as apprentices to help raise money for charity and build on our reputation. Outside work, there is a group who go to the gym together and go play football/badminton which others are able to join and build a community around this
Yes
There are lots of opportunities available and the apprentice scheme is very good. The training provider is looking to change and so when this does, then the apprenticeship will be very good and beneficial to everyone
I would recommend others to do some psychometric tests for the interview day. Also, I would recommend having some experiences to speak about and having something to make you stand out against the rest. Put yourself forwards wherever possible as you will gain so much experience from doing this
