I am currently a 3rd year technical apprentice based at Brough, I am in the process of moving around the different departments. At the moment I am based in the technical publications department. This involves carrying out modifications and write new aspects of the books that are used for the various customers to maintain the aircraft.
My knowledge and skills has expanded massively since starting my apprenticeship. I have gained intellectual knowledge through my HNC that I am currently doing at college. My skills have also benefited as I am learning on the job new systems and software that the company use. My knowledge of the product and the wider business have also grown massively.
I thoroughly enjoy the programme in which I am enrolled as I think it Is the best option for me. I personally couldn't have gone to university as I don't learn well using that method. however actually doing the work and seeing how it applies really benefits me.
On Brough site especially I feel I am valued and that is reflected in the type of work a receive. I am given proper tasks to carry out which make me feel like I have purpose and am not just there to carry out the usual mundane apprentice tasks.
The programme in which I am on is very well structured with all of us knowing what we need to complete in order to get on and gain our pay rises. I have regular meetings with my assessor who checks that I am on target both with college and NVq. we are all given the placements in which we will be going into a year in advance so there is no uncertainty.
As mentioned above I always receive support and guidance from my trainer. meetings are regularly set in order to go through our NVQ logs and pass off the relevant criteria. we also have regular progress reviews to set target and have a general catch up of how I am progressing.
I always receive support from the employer whether it be as mentioned above. I myself haven't had any issues but I would not hesitate to approach my trainer and use the approved routes in order to seek help.
I personally live local to site, as a result I would say the salary is perfectly fine for myself. The extra benefits gained through working for the company such as shares and pension are also a massive bonus.
I myself am a STEM ambassador through the company which allows me to go into schools and teach younger children about apprenticeships and give them an insight into engineering. I have also been involved with other things such as the outward bound and innovation challenge during my time as an apprentice.
Yes
I would say if youre looking to get into engineering then there is no better option. it allows you to earn while you learn and the company makes a big effort to protect and reward its employees. If you are lucky enough the company would also sponsor your degree.
I would say sit down with a parent or teacher and talk through all of the things you have been involved with or achieved and pick the ones that will add value to your application. Also keep revisiting your application as there might be things you remember later down the line.
