I work in Transversals which deal with a number of issues related to the Type 26 programme, such as Shock and Vulnerability of the ship, URN (Underwater Radiated Noise) and ABN (Airborne Noise) issues. As an apprentice, I am currently working with several members from each of these teams within their respective projects, helping with tasks while trying to learn for myself what the purpose of each project entails. We are constantly in contact with Stage 2 (Detail Design) to ensure any changes or additions to the rules and requirements of the design of the ship are viable and make sense to all the parties involved.
I have enhanced my presenting and communication skills as I am usually involved in presentations and meetings. I have learned how to use CAD software such as Tribon and Foran. I recently passed my HNC in Engineering Systems and am currently working on achieving my HND.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the programme so far. Every team I have worked with have been more than happy to help me with any issues I may have. I am always kept busy with work and I always feel that the work is challenging me.
I feel very valued by the company as they make it clear that they believe that apprentices are the future of the company and so they want to ensure that we get the best possible learning experience to benefit both ourselves and the company in the future
There is a great deal of structure within the programme such as an induction period whenever you are moving to a different area of the business. There are always different training sessions put in place to ensure you are kept safe and secure at work.
We have training officers who are always willing to help with any problems you feel you may have within the apprenticeship, whether it be further education of work itself
We receive a great deal of support from the employers from the HR team to the training team and all the staff and lecturers that we work with throughout the apprenticeship
The salary you receive as an apprentice is good (could always be more) and any travel costs are paid for by the company through expences
There are always company events and activities to get involved in (Outward Bound, charity events, etc.) We are also involved in STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering and Maths) and the respective Schools Engineering Challenge where we help tutor young children on basic engineering and then how to build a boat which will be used within an interschool challenge
Yes
There are many opportunities involved with working in BAE Systems where you can learn many different transferable skills and learn a trade which can become a highly fulfilling career.
Ensure you are always prepared for any interviews you will be asked to attend. Be confident and concise with your answers and ensure tat you leave a positive lasting impression by showing an enthusiasm and drive to work hard and learn. It is important to remember that you don't need to know everything as that is why you are getting into an apprenticeship but it is, however, important to show that you are willing to learn all you can.
