My role as a project manager and production planning engineer involves creating plans for the aircraft and managing the schedule and cost aspects of the aircraft. This is both an exciting and challenging role and I have been lucky enough to have been given so many responsibilities and tasks.
Over the course of my time in this apprenticeship I have learnt far more than I ever thought I would. I have not only gained knowledge and skill in cost, planning, finance and marketing but I have gained a wider appreciation for how a business is run.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship. It has made me into a stronger person and I have become more confident through the new skills that I learn everyday.
Even as an apprentice, I am largely valued and treated as any other member of staff which is great. I have also been given a lot of responsibility which gives me the opportunity to show my skills and knowledge and prove myself as a valued member of the team.
I believe the programme is very well structured, however I do believe the placement timeframes are often a bit short and having an opportunity to say where you would like to go would also be a good thing to add to the apprenticeship. Completing my NVQ alongside work is also very well structured as I am given plenty of time to do both.
I feel like I do receive a lot of support from the training school and my assessor. I have frequent sessions where NVQ, work life and home life are all discussed and I am given any support that is felt necessary.
My recent employer has been fantastic with the level of support they have given me. Although I can't say the same for my last few placements, I am happy to say I now feel like I am supported in whatever decision I make, whether that be work or home life.
I do believe that although the salary is incredible for someone my age, I still find it hard to survive! One thing I would criticise is the rate at which past apprentice years have received their final pay, it often being 3 months late!
There is such a wide range of opportunities to get involved in outside of work through the apprentice school, such as Princes Trust, German Exchange, Volunteering programmes etc. I have completed many events outside of work and have loved every minute of them.

I believe BAE Systems was the best choice I have made. It has given me a career to focus on and a chance to earn whilst learning on the job. BAE offer so many opportunities that will enhance your learning, give you experiences and encourage development.
I would always advise to mention teamwork in any application to BAE systems. They value teamwork so much as it is a huge part of both the apprenticeship scheme and daily roles. Showing them that you can work alongside others yet take on leadership roles will get you far.
